I received an anonymous IM from somebody that claimed to work for the Mobileme department from Apple. Apparently Steve Jobs cut several positions from the Mobileme project due to the bad take off, this person was one of them. I can only guess that this employee got his hands on some insider info and decided to leak it, this is my assumption. From of the look at this leaked ad, it shows a few new aspects for the touch
- Upgraded capacity to 64gb
- Wireless Sync
- Bluetooth
- 3G
- External Speaker
- Cut and Paste
- Camera
- GPS
I see a calendar icon as a feature but don’t understand new calendar features they have implemented.
No news on when it will be launched, but interestingly enough, the file name is called “touch_ad_1030re” so maybe a late October launch? All I know is that if this leaked ad is the real deal, I will have no problem spending serious coin for this. The current 32gb is simply not enough for me and I don’t want to “pick and choose” which music to carry with me, I want my entire library with me.
I wanted more info from this person, but I was blocked via IM shortly after I received the ad. I have no idea why the person sent me the ad, maybe it was a past client of mine, just stumped. Personally, I did not want to spread the word myself and thought about contacting Macrumors.com (I eventually did) but decided to post it myself as well.
The original image size of the image is 982×555 so I apologize for the scaled down version. I have my doubts this is real simply because it’s so close to the iPhone in options, so why cut into the iPhone world so much? But then again, if this legit Apple is going to make a killing on this new Touch.

there are a few major issues with this ad.
Firstly, Apple dropped the Reflective iPod Touch dock in the 1.1.3 update. It now features the same dock as iPhone.
Secondly, that camera looking thing on the front looks like a pretty cheap photoshop job.
Also, the calculator icon is that of devices on firmwares lower then 2.0. and all ipod touches shipped as of the 11th of July shipped with 2.0 on them. The 64GB hasnt yet been released, so it *has* to ship with at least 2.0
The picture contains apple’s “3G” icon thing under the “Features.” This is only available on a phone. 3G is PHONE technology, so putting this in the ipod touch would enable it to be used as a phone, with a contract with a service provider etc. This would totally defeat the ipod touch’s purpose, enabling people to have an iPhone-like device without having to sign up with a expensive service plan.

I actually have a friend that works for Apple and he took a camera phone shot of a 64 gb version of the touch. I don’t know if this ad is real, but I do know it exist. We will probably see this touch version in Sep.2009 unfortunately.

I work in the creative design industry. VERY OFTEN advertising and promotions of an item will get under way long before the technology is complete. In fact, it would not surprise me if campaign CONCEPTS were complete 8 to 12 months prior to any actual consumer release. Granted, the actual placed ADVERTISEMENTS are complete closer to premier dates, but the concept, look, content, copy, etc., is often settled up way in advance, and then tweaked and modified as the product takes final shape.
I agree that this looks a bit like a hack job, and so the ad itself may be false. But, speaking as a designer, it is VERY VERY COMMON to make a mock-up of something to use as a place-holder while an ad concept is being developed. More than the picture of the touch, the AD ITSEFL seems very off-brand for Apple. So, if this DID come from within the walls of Apple, I imagine it was a comp or spec piece intended for some internal advertising discussion, as opposed to an actual product ad. This possibility of being a comp or spec would also explain how it was so easily leaked . . . if it WERE spec work, then it is by nature a throw-away, and so therefore easy to smuggle out.
This would explain the date, Perhaps the AD SPEC DEADLINES were this year (10/08), but the product itself may not be released for quite some time.
Just an alternate explanation. Too often tech whores forget to look at the biggest picture . . . there are MANY efforts involved with apple, beyond the development and cost management of technology.

You mentioned “placeholder” when it comes to created an ad. I have had a couple tell me that these are indeed placeholders but I take rumors with a grain of salt even if they were Apple employees.
If this truly was just a concept, this would explain some of the Photoshop work, why would you spend a ton of time on concept ads. I worked as a creative director and I too know about creating the advertising pieces way before the release of the actual product.
Good insight XN

I think the 3G makes sense. No voice capability, just data. Alot of people carry a data only device for work and use for email and sms only.
With 3G you could:
-Take advantage of the built in GPS for real time turn by turn directions.
-Use the itouch as a modem for a laptop,
-Browse the internet anywhere AT&T/TMO have coverage
-Upload pictures to social networking sites or email photos real-time
-unlimited what you could do
Sign up for 5GB of monthly data for $40/mth, on a month to month contract. I would sign in a minute. I could get rid of my $30/mth AT&T blackberry personal plan that is data only. The only call that can be made is 911.

I’m guessing the launch will be in August. Personally, I wish the 64gb version would have been an obvious production model regardless of cost. I want to carry ALL my music instead of picking and choosing.
