I received an anonymous IM from somebody that claimed to work for the Mobileme department from Apple. Apparently Steve Jobs cut several positions from the Mobileme project due to the bad take off, this person was one of them. I can only guess that this employee got his hands on some insider info and decided to leak it, this is my assumption. From of the look at this leaked ad, it shows a few new aspects for the touch
- Upgraded capacity to 64gb
- Wireless Sync
- Bluetooth
- 3G
- External Speaker
- Cut and Paste
- Camera
- GPS
I see a calendar icon as a feature but don’t understand new calendar features they have implemented.
No news on when it will be launched, but interestingly enough, the file name is called “touch_ad_1030re” so maybe a late October launch? All I know is that if this leaked ad is the real deal, I will have no problem spending serious coin for this. The current 32gb is simply not enough for me and I don’t want to “pick and choose” which music to carry with me, I want my entire library with me.
I wanted more info from this person, but I was blocked via IM shortly after I received the ad. I have no idea why the person sent me the ad, maybe it was a past client of mine, just stumped. Personally, I did not want to spread the word myself and thought about contacting Macrumors.com (I eventually did) but decided to post it myself as well.
The original image size of the image is 982×555 so I apologize for the scaled down version. I have my doubts this is real simply because it’s so close to the iPhone in options, so why cut into the iPhone world so much? But then again, if this legit Apple is going to make a killing on this new Touch.

there are a few major issues with this ad.
Firstly, Apple dropped the Reflective iPod Touch dock in the 1.1.3 update. It now features the same dock as iPhone.
Secondly, that camera looking thing on the front looks like a pretty cheap photoshop job.
Also, the calculator icon is that of devices on firmwares lower then 2.0. and all ipod touches shipped as of the 11th of July shipped with 2.0 on them. The 64GB hasnt yet been released, so it *has* to ship with at least 2.0
The picture contains apple’s “3G” icon thing under the “Features.” This is only available on a phone. 3G is PHONE technology, so putting this in the ipod touch would enable it to be used as a phone, with a contract with a service provider etc. This would totally defeat the ipod touch’s purpose, enabling people to have an iPhone-like device without having to sign up with a expensive service plan.

Too good to be true then, I will be contacted Apple about it’s validity.

I actually have a friend that works for Apple and he took a camera phone shot of a 64 gb version of the touch. I don’t know if this ad is real, but I do know it exist. We will probably see this touch version in Sep.2009 unfortunately.

probably but then why does it say in the bottom right hand corner “Copyright 2008″ i’m thinking if not end of october, then probably thanksgiving or after Christmas..or maybe the January update….. but why would it say copyright 08?

I work in the creative design industry. VERY OFTEN advertising and promotions of an item will get under way long before the technology is complete. In fact, it would not surprise me if campaign CONCEPTS were complete 8 to 12 months prior to any actual consumer release. Granted, the actual placed ADVERTISEMENTS are complete closer to premier dates, but the concept, look, content, copy, etc., is often settled up way in advance, and then tweaked and modified as the product takes final shape.
I agree that this looks a bit like a hack job, and so the ad itself may be false. But, speaking as a designer, it is VERY VERY COMMON to make a mock-up of something to use as a place-holder while an ad concept is being developed. More than the picture of the touch, the AD ITSEFL seems very off-brand for Apple. So, if this DID come from within the walls of Apple, I imagine it was a comp or spec piece intended for some internal advertising discussion, as opposed to an actual product ad. This possibility of being a comp or spec would also explain how it was so easily leaked . . . if it WERE spec work, then it is by nature a throw-away, and so therefore easy to smuggle out.
This would explain the date, Perhaps the AD SPEC DEADLINES were this year (10/08), but the product itself may not be released for quite some time.
Just an alternate explanation. Too often tech whores forget to look at the biggest picture . . . there are MANY efforts involved with apple, beyond the development and cost management of technology.

You mentioned “placeholder” when it comes to created an ad. I have had a couple tell me that these are indeed placeholders but I take rumors with a grain of salt even if they were Apple employees.
If this truly was just a concept, this would explain some of the Photoshop work, why would you spend a ton of time on concept ads. I worked as a creative director and I too know about creating the advertising pieces way before the release of the actual product.
Good insight XN

I think the 3G makes sense. No voice capability, just data. Alot of people carry a data only device for work and use for email and sms only.
With 3G you could:
-Take advantage of the built in GPS for real time turn by turn directions.
-Use the itouch as a modem for a laptop,
-Browse the internet anywhere AT&T/TMO have coverage
-Upload pictures to social networking sites or email photos real-time
-unlimited what you could do
Sign up for 5GB of monthly data for $40/mth, on a month to month contract. I would sign in a minute. I could get rid of my $30/mth AT&T blackberry personal plan that is data only. The only call that can be made is 911.
November 3rd, 2008 at 10:29 pm
I’m guessing the launch will be in August. Personally, I wish the 64gb version would have been an obvious production model regardless of cost. I want to carry ALL my music instead of picking and choosing.

February 16th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
The camera on the front is actually a great idea. It would be used as a webcam for video conferences. :3

The BIGGER smarter ipod. why would apple advertise that its bigger ipods need to be SMALLER so wouldnt it be a Smaller Smarter Ipod Touch sounds better to.
March 1st, 2009 at 3:10 pm
i find some speculations of this ‘advert’ hard to believe. as someone has said, the camera looks photoshopped. if it has a speaker like the 2nd gen, it will not have an icon for the speaker. it will simply play through the speaker when the earphones aren’t connected. i also doubt that it will have GPS as the iphone 3G doesnt even have GPS. the only way that the ipod touch will have GPS is if another iphone comes out this year with that on it. all in all i think that this advert is fake, and it is well done.
March 19th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
Why did you guys directly think it’s a camera on the front? Actually it may just be a speaker, or a microphone for some new apps coming out. Plus, apple never said on this (fake) advertisement that it would have a camera as a new feature. Personally I agree that this may just be a mock-up for future advertisement of this new iPod, and therefore the copyright of 08 may just be for this mock-up. As for the 3G its NOT only for phones 3G enables wireless communication (meaning: online networking, real time video chat, etc.). So before you assume something read up on it because it may just turn out your wrong. As for the model itself it may be that this is the new Fall ‘09 release.

Ok… well if there was a 3g network.. How would they charge you? I mean …. At&t uses the customers plan to cover the charges. But how would they do it on an ipod touch? And i dont think they will come out with another one for a while.. sure it may have more space… but it will be like 500 – 600 dollars and i dont think its worth it if i could get the 32 for 400ish.
March 31st, 2009 at 11:57 pm
@ Nathan Graham “also doubt that it will have GPS as the iphone 3G doesnt even have GPS. ” DUDE! What are you talking about?!?! the 3G totally has a GPS receiver and it also triangulates via cell signals, the 2G didn’t have GPS. Do some research man!
@ everyone…. 64GB will really take care of all your music needs? I can’t even fit my music collect on a 160GB classic! (I use my old 5G video for movies)
I wish they would take advantage of the price drop of micro SD cards! Currently 8GB=$20 16GB=$80! that would be awesome!
The touch really needs a microphone so that it can use iphone apps like shazam and do Voip
April 6th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
Ya this is fake and was probably a first generation ipod touch put in photoshop. LOL. Ill mess you up foos
April 9th, 2009 at 3:19 am
I think it is funny how no one has mentioned that the iPod touch pictured is clearly the first generation model. You can tell by the outer rim. The first generation touches had the dull grey rim, while the second generation has the shiny stainless steel (I think that’s what it is). This ad is clearly a photoshopped fake. I am curious to know what REAL features the iPod touch 3rd generation will have though…

May 29th, 2009 at 2:14 am
i wait for ipod touch because it going to have bluetooth so u can call peoplefor free
so why would u buy iphone or normal phone so u can talk and pay a bill each month
June 14th, 2009 at 4:07 am
I’m pretty sure everything on that ad was photoshoped, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a concept for somthing coming out this fall
June 25th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Its fake because
- Doesnt have notes application
- No weather application
- The bottom part where music, videos, photos and itunes icons are supposed to be greyish. It’s not
Therefore this is a facking fake.

guys the thing on da front is a camera used for webcam, but there is also 1 on da back 2 take pics with. it would b really cool 2 put in 3g so people can use features like the gps, checking email on the go, and stuff like that. but there will definetely be a new itouch this fall 09.
August 15th, 2009 at 9:48 am
y would it be a 1st gen itouch if the ad says the new itouch. u can tell it s the new 1 coz it has the apple sign on da ad. it also has the writing of itouch how apple write it. and it is also copyrighted
August 24th, 2009 at 12:02 am
i agree with haha speaker makes total sense them camera sept is coming up soon and i was waiting to buy an ipod touch so if this one is really nice and full of great features ima go 4 it
September 3rd, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Um…. the iPod touch can’t have 3G WTF? It’s not a phone this is a false photoshopped ad…
LOL Alo I tested the iPod toch 3rd Generation…
It has a 3 Megapixel Camera, ARM Cortex Processor, Microphone built-inand PowerGX SVR GPU and also 256MB of RAM
Also the 64GB version was dropped because the costs were too high (Since they use Flash based drives 64GB flash based drives are only SSDs only and SSDs cost extremely high
Also GPS cannot be in the iPod touch because it uses Wi-Fi… and GPS would be a waste and it wasn’t on the iPdo touch I tested (though it was a early revision during Early August)
They are also droppign the 8GB version
justinxtreme@yahoo.com
But I can be wrong about the 64GB but that’s what they told me
June 9th, 2010 at 1:57 am
The 64gb is the best size. Touch 64gb
